The Palermo-based luxury atelier combines Sicilian design with Indian craftsmanship, natural fibres, botanical dyes and small-batch production.

PALERMO, Sicily, Oct. 27, 2026 -- Lavor Ombra, the luxury atelier specialising in handcrafted rugs, textiles and objects, announces its international launch. Founded by Italian/Australian designer Mariella Ienna, the brand combines Sicily's cultural richness with the centuries-old hand-knotting traditions of Bhadohi, India.

Lavor Ombra is a Palermo-based luxury atelier specialising in handcrafted rugs, textiles and objects, combining Sicilian design with traditional Indian craftsmanship and a commitment to Radical Transparency®.

"My years working in India's rug and textile industry have instilled a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship, materials and skilled artisans behind each creation," said Mariella Ienna, founder of Lavor Ombra. "Every rug is the work of many hands, and honouring that requires complete transparency in how materials are sourced and each piece is made. Our vision is to make integrity and craftsmanship an intrinsic part of luxury."

Two Rug Collections: Primo and Lusso

  • Primo: The founding collection comprises 14 designs, each offered in four colourways and named after Palermo's streets, textures, and stories. Examples include Cretto, Pizzo, Papiri and Chhaya.
  • Lusso: Six small-batch luxury yarn pieces, created in limited quantities to showcase the richness and tactility of exceptional fibres. Custom rugs and textiles are available for trade collaborations.

The Growing Need for Radical Transparency® in Luxury Interiors

As demand for responsible sourcing grows, Lavor Ombra places Radical Transparency® at the centre of its design philosophy. Each rug's knot count is disclosed, with its reverse displayed to demonstrate craftsmanship. Materials include cruelty-free Eri and indigenous silks, undyed yarns and botanical dyes, selected to reduce water consumption and environmental impact.

The brand supports GoodWeave and recognises geographical origin, cultural heritage and artisan traditions as essential to provenance. Production remains small-batch, with materials vetted against ethical standards.

Inspired by Chhaya, the Hindu goddess of shadow, Lavor Ombra celebrates endurance, duality and transformation. Palermo, a city of cultural layers and reinvention, provides its creative foundation.

The collections are available at lavorombra.com. Interior architects and designers can join the Lavor Ombra Trade Program for exclusive pricing, custom samples and bespoke enquiries.
